The senior storage engineer is accountable for overseeing the usage of, maintenance and expansion of storage solutions for data within the entire organization. They manage and direct an engineering team in order to make sure that the company's storage solutions for data are operating at optimum levels and that any issues with the network are addressed in the shortest time possible. The senior storage engineer is expected to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field of storage of data and lead the implementation of innovative solutions as often as is feasible. They are accountable for establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with vendors outside the company, and they must bargain with vendors to secure the best deals required to fulfill their duties. Senior storage engineers need to interact with other departments within the organization to instruct them on proper usage of storage solutions for data and also determine the issues faced by the department that can be resolved through the use of various solutions.

Candidates for these positions must possess at least an undergraduate degree or equivalent in a related field, such like computer science. In addition, they should possess at least five years of working in a similar position that includes experience in the design of and maintaining, operating and growing solutions for data storage. Senior storage engineers should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and a keen eye to the smallest of details. They should be knowledgeable of different programs that are that deal with data storage such as (but not only) EMC software solutions, SAN fabric architecture, network-attached storage, and VMWare.
