The general manager of manufacturing companies oversees numerous processes related to the production and distribution of products. The general manager typically is responsible for hiring employees, giving feedback to employees and establishing team-building strategies. They are required to provide the motivation and direction of employees, and also oversee the marketing activities of the company as well as set sales goals and make sure that the company's marketing plans are adhered to by employees.
Manufacturing companies GMs must ensure that their employees follow all safety and operational policies as well as the applicable laws. They can delegate tasks and monitor progress to ensure employees are working on time and that deadlines are met. Because this is a higher-level position, many years of experience within the manufacturing field and/or leadership/management may be required, and they must always ensure that the company's service and quality are upheld while keeping costs low.
They GMs typically oversee several departments. They should be able to collaborate with other departments to resolve issues as well as help with issues that arise during manufacturing processes. Experience with computers and Microsoft Word are often necessary for this job, but other programs may be utilized according to the company. A bachelor's or higher degree in a field that is related to business is usually required for this job.
