Description

An operations technician performs a number of tasks on the production floor of a manufacturing facility. While automation has replaced much of the labor performed at manufacturing plants, humans are still necessary to ensure that more fragile parts of a product are properly handled and that machinery is placing parts together correctly.

An operations technician performs a variety of functions on the manufacturing floor between automated stages or tasks. The operations technician may work on a conveyer line dealing with fragile baseline components; they take the fragile parts on the upstream side of the assembly line and gently fit two or more fragile components together to make a larger composite component. The operations technician then takes the composite component and place it on a downstream conveyor.

At other points in the manufacturing process, an operations technician may test assembled products. For integrated circuits or electronic devices, an operations technician may take an ohmmeter and apply it to two points on the device to ensure that the voltage tolerances are correct; if there are repeated failures, the operations technician must inform senior support personnel so the potential defective products are pulled from the production line and set aside to be tested and refurbished as necessary. Additionally, the operations technician may be required to update databases and complete electronic quality checklists.

Educational and experience requirements for this position vary. A high school diploma or equivalent may be required, for example. Previous experience in a similar position and/or in a manufacturing setting may be preferred. Operations technicians must pay excellent attention to detail and have good hand-eye coordination.
