Risk control consultants generally work for insurance companies, though experienced consultants may work independently and serve multiple insurance companies. These consultants must be thoroughly knowledgeable of risk management and loss control technical disciplines and should have, or be willing to obtain, professional designations such as associate in risk management (ARM) and other safety-related designations.A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business management, or risk management is generally required for this position, though some employers may accept candidates who have significant work experience in risk management and/or loss control. Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint) are also required, as risk control consultants are expected to use automated tools and computer technology to perform their duties. They must also be willing to travel by air, car, or rail, and overnight travel is often necessary.Risk control consultants must have good customer service and interpersonal skills, as well as analytical skills and excellent oral and written communication. The ability to speak two languages, such as English and Spanish, is highly beneficial for applicants. Aspiring risk control consultants should also be physically fit, as they are often required to access elevated locations when performing loss control surveys, and willing to work while exposed to extreme heat or cold, chemicals, electrical current, or other conditions.
