An engineer for aircraft is the person who is responsible for making sure that aircrafts that belong to the air service fleet providers are maintained properly and repaired. They are also safe to fly. The engineer conducts a range of inspections every day on various aircrafts, records the results of any tests or anomalies conducted on the aircrafts and oversees any repairs or re-inspections that are required.

A lot of the tests that engineers of aircrafts perform are routine in nature. They typically include inspection and/or testing of the aircraft mechanical and flight systems when the plane is on the ground. Engineers typically record the results of each test and the test logs are kept to be inspected by any authority who may request for them at a later time. Apart from these standard tests, some aircrafts are equipped with special inspections that are required to be conducted regularly. Engineers also conduct these deeper assessments of the aircraft's flying capability and carry any corrective measures which may need to be carried out.

Aircraft engineers are typically people who have a degree from a university in aerospace engineering or a related field. They must at a minimum be able to complete a postsecondary education in maintenance and repair of aircrafts. A majority of jurisdictions require accreditation and evidence of continuous education for aircraft engineers as a condition to be able to hold this position. Engineers working on aircraft typically work in an aviation mechanic shop during the regular working hours during the week.
