Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Aligarh was formed by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1920 by taking the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College to a new level as one of the most important universities of Institutions of learning in India. Spread across an area of 1155 acres in Aligarh City, Uttar Pradesh, India, the university offers 156 courses and has students studying from different parts of the country as well as globe such as Asia and Africa. AMU is ranked as one of the top 20 research institutions in India and enjoys the credibility of being an Institution of excellence in both national and international character. With a student population of about 28000 students, 1342 teachers and more than 5600 non-teaching staff, the university has spread its wings of education in 12 faculties availing 98 teaching departments.

The university has been ranked 26th by the NIRF 2021 in the dental category. Aligarh Muslim University is ranked 35th by the NIRF 2021 in the engineering category. The university has secured 13th rank in the architecture category, 24th rank in the research category, 49th in the management category, 15th rank in the Medical category, 11th rank in the law category, 10th rank in the university category and 18th in the overall category in the NIRF 2021 Ranking.

The AMU has 19 halls of residence with 80 hostels, which is a unique attribute to which residential character for most of the students. The programmes of study in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels starting from social sciences, humanities, sciences and the University has spread its offerings across many departments of study such as engineering, dental history, Islamic studies, computer science, and cultural studies. The AMU also has other centres of learning affiliated to the main Aligarh campus and also maintains schools in the city for both primary and higher school levels of learning for boys and girls. The university is proudly Islamic by nature and Indian in character and is a living symbol to the composite synthetic culture of India and a champion of secular principles and way of life.

Aligarh Muslim University is located in the city of Aligarh between the river regions of Ganga and Yamuna and is exactly situated 130 kilometres Southeast of Delhi. The best route is to reach Delhi International airport and the city can be reached through Delhi using the Delhi-Howrah rail route or the Grand Trunk Road. The University Campus is located 2 kilometres away from the Aligarh Railway Station and is reachable through public transport or taxi service. The distance between the university and the AMU bus stand is 2kms.
