Steel detailers prepare detailed drawings of steel for various structures, meeting specifications established by architect. They must be able to detail structural metal projects of various sizes from start to finish, as well as possess the ability to maintain working relationships with project managers. Steel detailers must have good time management skills to ensure projects on completed on schedule, and they need to be able to detail projects with speed and accuracy, accepting project-related challenges as required. Steel detailers may act as mentors to the drafting department and other departments as needed. They also act as the detailer for shop drawings of various sizes, including complex projects, as well as oversee other shop drawings as required.

At least an associate's degree in architectural drafting or a related field is typically required for this position. Steel detailers should have experience in the use of SDS or 2 or Tekila X-Steel, and they must be able to read and understand blueprints. Knowledge of 3-D modeling is required. Additionally, steel detailers must be detail-oriented, have exceptional analytical skills, be self-motivated, and proactively deal with work-related problems. This position typically requires prolonged sitting, as well as some bending, stooping, and stretching. Hand-eye coordination and the manual dexterity to operate keyboards, copy machines, telephones, calculators, and other office equipment are needed.
