Customs compliance managers have numerous responsibilities and provide advice and guidance to senior management to ensure compliance with current customs laws, which is critical for the application of U.S. government regulations such as the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR), U.S Customs and Border Protection Regulations, and Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC).Customs compliance managers are responsible for coordinating with numerous internal company assets to acquire any and all required U.S government export/import licenses, permits, release authorizations, and determinations of commodity jurisdictions. They also interact with both internal and external entities to coordinate the export/import of various products and/or services and with government agencies to verify compliance. They are also tasked with the proper application of trade laws and overseeing an export/import program within the facility.Customs compliance managers must implement any necessary company procedures to comply with trade laws and review requests for the import or export of controlled goods and services. They may also identify and develop any training needs related to the export/import process and identify concerns related to compliance with export/import law via audits and assessments. They may also serve as Empowered Officials when submitting export authorization requests to the Department of State Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
