A maintenance superintendent is responsible for maximizing their plant's capabilities while minimizing production costs. To this end, the superintendent is responsible for personnel management, budgeting, operations, and project management.
Among the superintendent's personnel management functions are delegating tasks, overseeing productivity, providing additional training, recruiting new employees, and terminating problematic employees. For budgeting, the maintenance superintendent creates and reviews plant budgets, looking for opportunities to reduce costs without adversely affecting productivity or quality. The maintenance superintendent's operational tasks include monitoring and reviewing maintenance activities in compliance with local code and federal regulations; they also oversee the execution of repair procedures to ensure compliance with plant reliability strategies while employing good standards and practices. Finally, the maintenance superintendent acts as a project manager, helping maximize productivity and cost-savings; they determine the scope and requirements of the project, and then break the project down into smaller tasks for delegation to their team. Then they monitor the progress of the tasks and, after the tasks have been completed, the superintendent oversees integration, testing, and implementation.
Most maintenance superintendents are Project Management Professional (PMP) certified. Furthermore, the position requires that superintendents have strong working knowledge of safety codes, OSHA, and environmental regulations. Due to the managerial nature of the position, maintenance superintendents must also have a strong business acumen. They often must have previous experience in management - including project management - roles.
