Begin building your jazz repertoire with the blues The first course in this series will give you an introduction to jazz improvisation on the piano, and equip you to play jazz piano in a group using a playalong. You’ll first focus on the blues, before moving on to playing a jazz standard and building a foundation in the art of improvisation. Play jazz piano with a group of musicians The second course will develop your jazz improvisation skills further. You’ll learn in more depth about the blues and jazz standards, and explore jazz improvisation using playalongs of jazz classics like ‘I Got Rhythm’, ‘All the Things You Are’, and ‘Autumn Leaves’. Build your jazz technique by playing solo Kicking it up a notch, the third course will teach you how to play solo jazz piano and a jazz waltz. You’ll discover scale and chord theory, and explore modulation, swing, and rhythmic phrases. Enjoy 20 new jazz tunes and a jazz concert with Ray d’Inverno The final course will introduce you to advanced blues sequences, and ballads, as well as special devices to incorporate Latin and funk into your jazz piano style. You’ll finish the course enjoying a solo concert by Ray d’Inverno, followed by the greatly revered Ray d’Inverno Trio.

Although improvisation may seem effortless, it is a complex skill that requires a lot more foundational knowledge. Jazz improvisation requires that you first understand the influences and styles.

This course will familiarize you with blues and teach you why it is so important to jazz piano.

Learn and compare the three major chords and scales used in jazz and classical music. You will also learn how to play open sevenths in root. You will learn the F blues, voiced sevenths, as well as how to play the F American blues, seven scales, full blues, and full-blues scale.

Learn about jazz improvisation theory and the four ways you can improvise

Your improvisation will be enhanced by learning the diminished chord and scale. Before you can start playing and improvising, you'll be able to learn the fundamentals of motivic, scalic and special improvisation.

You will also be able to play along with the Blue Room jazz standards and improvise using your new skills.

Learn jazz piano: Improvising on Jazz Standards

Good improvisation uses a variety of tools and techniques to respond and create your own interpretations. This course will help you learn the art and technique of jazz improvisation. You'll also be able to improvise using a minor blues sequence or rhythm changes. You will learn how to respond to different music pieces and improve your ability to improvise. As you listen to John Coltrane's tracks, you will learn about both the theoretical and practical sides of music. You will also learn about modal jazz and its importance. A particular focus is on The Clock of Keys and its application to All the Things You Are. The course's final sections will introduce you two jazz standards, and help you understand the inner workings behind improvisation. Through a combination of theory and practice, you will have a solid understanding of how to improvise jazz standards. You will learn how to improvise over rhythm changes, and how to play left-hand voicings in three ways.

Learn Jazz Piano: Advanced and Solo Playing

Jazz can be as solo or in a group. Both require different skills. This course will teach you how to play solo jazz piano.

Through a mixture of theory and practice you'll learn how to play solo piano and also how to analyse and play two classic jazz songs.

Then you'll be able to go deeper into root position (also known as solo playing). You will learn new techniques and be able to analyse and play three standard jazz songs.

You'll learn about the various devices that jazz pianists use to start and end tunes with the help of waltz intros.

Scale theory will be covered before you learn about the melodic minor ascending and Ionian scales.

The course will end with an examination on chord theory. The course will teach you how to re-harmonise chord sequences and how to play and analyze classic jazz piano tracks.

You'll be able, by the end of this course, to apply your knowledge of modulation devices and scale theory to your solo playing. You will also be able to play and improvise jazz waltzes.

Learn Jazz Piano: Final Topics and Two Concerts

This course will help you expand your jazz piano repertoire as well as improve your improvisation skills. This final course will combine all you have learned so far and give you cool new skills. The course will introduce you to four advanced blues techniques and the conventions of playing ballads. Latin jazz, AfroCuban influences, Brazilian influences, and bossa Novas will all be covered. Then, you'll dive into jazz influences, often called crossovers, such as jazz funk and third steam, indo jazz, free jazz, improvised jazz, and free jazz. The fourth route to jazz improvisation will be explained, along with ways to support soloists, also known as comping. These new tools can be applied to Beautiful Love or My Romance.

You'll be able to use this course to develop your musical skills and a range of techniques and influences. Learn about pianistic and non-pianistic influences and how to practice. You will also learn tips on how to transcribe, compose and form a group to get gigs. To inspire you, the course ends with two concert programs: a solo concert and one from My Piano Trio.
